I think a banana peel was a polite stand-in for a piece of dogshit, that wouldn’t gross people out too much.

It doesn’t happen very often because of the massive and ongoing awareness campaign.

I was running a marathon 3 years ago, probably around the 8 mile mark and saw someone ahead of me drop the peel from their banana on the pavement. Since i was feeling good I purposefully stepped on it thinking nothing would happen and slipped and almost crashed completely, but I managed to run it out to keep my balance. So it’s not completely unrealistic

In school, we put a banana peel face down on the floor during lunch. It was more of a goof thinking “who the fuck would slip on a banana peel”. 30 seconds later, some girl come around the corner, boot first into the banana peel and was really close to eating shit into a cafeteria table. She caught herself at the last second.

We all pretended we had no idea (dumbshit kids) but were stunned that it actually happened. Nobody was laughing, we were all just like " what the fuck?!"

Similar story, but a dude did slip on it, and like a cartoon his legs shot out from under him someone becoming momentarily horizontal in the air.

      We were STUNNED.

I’ve literally done both in my lifetime. Soap as a kid and banana peel as an adult and laughed my ass off that it was even possible.

It’s coming for you my friend. Just sheer probability means you’re going to be slipping on one at some point in your life.

I was smug once like you.

Literally only once in my entire life.

I worked at a major restaurant chain for a few years about a decade ago. One of our specialty bar drinks was a frozen strawberry banana daiquiri thing that was made with real bananas. One day, our bartender was mixing like five of these things for a big group. The bananas were cut in half in the morning for portioning and kept in a cooler until needed, where the half would be peeled and used. One of the bananas got peeled, put in the blender, and the half peel was tossed into the trash can with the others. Or so she thought.

She hands out the frozen drinks, then quickly steps away to go check on something else, walks past the trash can, and slips on a banana peel that didn’t quite make it into the trash. We were busy, so many customers and a few servers saw.

She didn’t get hurt. She mostly caught herself before hitting the ground. But for the rest of the time I worked there, we would poke fun at her for tripping on a banana peel that she put there.

The one kitchen slip that can’t be prevented with no-slip kitchen shoes!

On a side note, those shoes are amazing and totally worth the spend. All the extra slits in the tread make even oily floors navigable.
