I think you have an oversized confidence in our international justice system. When the good guys commit genocide or war crimes, no one goes to the Hague. Cases in point: Indonesia (twice over), Guatemala, the war on “terror”.

This has nothing to do whatsoever with protecting children. That is not the goal. This is anti-privacy, plain and simple. Look, I’m not saying Ukrainians defending themselves is a bad thing. But, and I know this may be controversial, war crimes are a bad thing. And I’m going to get even more edgy and contrarian: I don’t think anyone should commit war crimes.
Do you think war crimes would be justified in Ukraines defense? Do you think it would be ok for Ukrainians to torture PoWs to get information? Do you think they should be allowed to keep ethnic Russians in concentration camps the same way America did for the Japanese? Because if Ukraine were to start doing these things (or if it turned out they were doing these things), that would be cause for me to start doubting whether they were the good guys in this conflict.

It’s always been a label so subjective that it’s essentially meaningless. There’s a reason why most big name news cables have “don’t use the word terror or terrorist” in their style guides.
