Technology@lemmy.world•AMD denies researcher a $10,000 bug bounty after fixing critical auto-updater vulnerability — security flaw took 124 days to patchEnglish
113·11 days agoI guess it’s one of those “justifiable but unwise” sort of things. If your company is doing a bug bounty program to stay on top of security vulnerabilities, what you don’t want is to create the perception that the work of devs who look for these vulnerabilities isn’t appreciated, for example, by skimping on bounties over technicalities.
Paying the 10k doesn’t ruin the company and allows them to fix a section of code that may become a vulnerability in the future. Not paying the 10k saves them 10k at the price of the devs’ trust that keeps this program effective. From a financial point of view, this is some very poor decision making.

8·1 month agoFerrari execs, probably: “No, we have to make clear that we’re modern™ and there’s more to our cars than toxic masculinity!!!”
… which might even be a good selling point for a lot of people, except for the kind of people who buy a Ferrari.

68·1 month agoThe sports car manufacturer’s cycle of business:
- Lose revenue due to EV competition.
- Design EV that looks like a cotton candy/kid’s toys version of your other cars.
- EV sells poorly.
- Scrap EV plans and return to non-EV lineup.
- Go back to 1.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL about skeleton watches which deliberately have all the moving parts visibleEnglish
2·1 month agoSome companies have mechanical watches in the 400-500€ range that can go for 200€ used. I have a Junkers that I bought used for 200€ some years ago, and it’s got a glass bottom (other models do, too). But honestly, I wouldn’t make this a criterion, because you rarely see the back, and skeleton watches can sometimes look tacky.

politics @lemmy.world•SHOCK POLL: Trump Approval Craters to 33% in New AP Poll, Whopping 67% Disapprove
161·2 months agoNew lows/highs in polling are definitely worth reporting, but we also shouldn’t overinterpret individual polls. Nate Silver’s approval tracker still has Trump at 39.3% approval, just below the 40% line.
So what I’m trying to say is: It’s still much much worse than y’all think. High costs of living, cruelty towards immigrants and non-white citizens, blatant corruption, wars, and all that together doesn’t even move the needle that much.
