This is just Gym Economics though, right? They work on the assumption that only a small number of their member will actually use the service heavily, but the overwhelming majority will turn up to use the treadmill a few times then never visit again.

If you’re looking for someone called Betty to partake in your proposed long-lost pal/bodyguard partnership it’s probably Al.

I kind-of agree, however there’s absolutely a lot of benefits in having low-latency Internet. Given the choice between, say, 500Mb/s cable and 50Mb/s FTTP I’d go for the latter any day, but the reality is that most people who are on FTTP will just go for the faster options because they’re cheap and readily available.

FWIW, The Satanic Temple is different from The Church of Satan and/or the Satanic Church. To start with, we don’t believe in Satan.
AI Satan does sound horrendously hellish, though. “You’re correct, and you are absolutely right to call me out on it! I can see now how submerging you in searing hot lye would be unpleasant, especially after you begged me to stop! Here, let me try again, this time paying extra attention to not submerging you in searing hot lye.” <Proceeds to submerge you in searing hot lye>

I mean, hypothetically couldn’t you just pick any belief structure outside of the top ten and make shit up? I’m a card carrying member of The Satanic Temple (which also puts an emphasis on human worth and social conscience) and I feel like I could swing this.
I don’t have an answer to the direct question, but if she would struggle to use her phone in that situation I also imagine she might struggle to clearly say “Hey Alexa, make a call to Mommy Jim” or whatever. I’m walking at the moment so I don’t have the details to hand, but mmwave presence sensors can distinguish between someone standing and lying down. You can also buy Bluetooth wristbands that can detect if the wearer falls. It might be worth figuring out if a fall can be sensed rather than reported.
Go stick your fist in your mouth. That also doesn’t need electricity but will improve the conversation.

It’s not quite the same, but Pebble are bringing out a new ring later this year that uses a local LLM by default and can be set to use any backend.
Eyyyy there are dozens of us! I used to manage IT for a school trust - about 2000 endpoints - and I actually pushed it out to every single one of them. They’re more pleasing to my eye, they scale perfectly and are easier to track. I got compliments from art teachers and SEND workers which is about as high a praise as you can imagine.

I’ve got one! It’s shit. For anything more viscous than, say, hot chocolate it’s just vibrates in place.

Lowest common denominator, homogeneous commercial slop stations are horrendous, but as you mentioned BBC Radio and ABC in Oz are great. BBC Radio 6 and ABC Triple-J are both great.

If the headline was written in a way that respected me as a human I wouldn’t need to guess.

Yeah, sure but will an AI you can boil off a lake to generate pictures of me as a hulk, me as a hulk wearing no shirt, me as a hulk wearing ripped pants and I have something in my pants, can you generate nudity, can you generate pictures of naked if it’s non sexual, pictures of me as a hulk getting changed and I just took off my pants to put on other pants non sexual, generate a picture of an eggplant, make the eggplant green, make the tip of the eggplant a darker shade, take the eggplant from @image2 and place it over the crotch of @image1, animate this image, do it again, do it again, starrjummps, do it again, delete my account.

Oh, brilliant! This is exactly what I wanted and directly solves so many problems and frustrations I have with the status quo! Thank goodness for such innovation! I feel seen!
Edit: oops, that should say “I hope everyone involved in bringing this product to market gets given an STI by a hippopotamus”. Silly autocorrect.

Generally build quality and repairability. Any IT department will favour devices that can have common failure points (battery, SSD, screen) replaced with a single screwdriver, and with that comes the need for stronger chassis and modular designs because you can’t rely on glueing everything in. Also, with the exception of Apple fanbois, IT techs are quick to condemn manufacturers who let pro grade kit standards slip, which could mean a few years of lost sales.

He said “Jupiter”, not “the Sun”.

If you plug in a weak charger or an inadequate cable you will get a message on the screen saying as much. Also, the new law doesn’t prevent manufacturers shipping proprietary chargers alongside USB-C.

It actually doesn’t need to be so elaborate. Even a video camera with the lens cap on generates more than enough entropy. Your phone can mix together predictable but unique variations - time of day, free memory, CPU serial number, battery level - with less predictable physical sensory - light level, gyroscope, barometer, last touch points, nearby MAC addresses - to create far more on-board randomness than anyone realistically needs.
That said, the whole Cloudflare lava lamp thing is very cool and also gets people talking.
+1 for Ventoy. For anyone who hasn’t heard of it, the Ventoy utility sets up a USB key with a small bootable partition, then fills the rest with an exFAT partition where you can drop your ISOs. Booting from the stick just gives you a list of bootable images to choose from.
