  • I mentioned this in another thread, but if Linus starts acknowledging the ethical questions of where good code is coming from, things unravel fast. Microsoft is a major contributor. So are plenty of defense, oil, industrial prison complex, etc. Someone overtly evil is contributing code.

Further just the pure tech industry isn’t free from sin, Intel and AMD contribute lots to the Kernel and they certainly utilize slave or child labor at some point in chip production.

There are no good people within any part of the tech industry and yet AI is the line? Is it because that’s the worst evil in our industry or is it because this one is the most loud and inconvenient to us?

  • I think its really hard for something like the Linux kernel project to look at AI from an economic and environmental aspect that doesn’t start asking hard questions about Linux itself.

AI for instance runs very well on Linux and almost certainly all of these hyperscalers and compute centers are running Linux in some form.

If Linus is going to take a hard stance on economic and environmental reasons, is he also going to ban these orgs from using Linux?

I don’t really want to do too much “what about” isms because I think it would be hella based to see the defense industry, oil industry, and AI industries all get a “fuck you figure it out on your own”. I’m just saying I can completely understand why Linus might not want to play that game since his greatest concern is to simply make sure Linux is getting better.

  • TBH, for every day computing, I think a 10-15 year old laptop running Linux probably runs better than a current R-V board. Less efficiently probably, but in terms of responsiveness and normal measures of usefulness.

So genuinely, if you really wanted to avoid giving big tech more money there’s no real difference other than being able to say you absolutely don’t even use an x86 chip you hate big tech so much (which is based and I respect)
