Technology@lemmy.world•Android's new developer verification rollout begins, sideloading changes are nextEnglish
29·3 months agoThe weirdest part to me: this comes after the EU determined that Apple’s locked store is too restrictive, and Apple agreed to allow 3rd party stores. Why the hell would Android go in the opposite direction? Will this put them in violation of the same EU regulation?

Privacy@lemmy.ml•How much proof is there that smart tvs and phones listen to you?
10·3 months agoAFAIK this is the only evidence: a claim by a marketing company that they’re actually doing it. However, they have some reason to lie about this, bc it makes them sound all-knowing and powerful to their clients.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•I made an open source website to read free scientific papers
1·6 months agoThank you for this! Definitely cool to get a better UI for this.
However, I’ll say that the biggest pain point w/r/t academic papers isn’t Arxiv’s interface. It’s the papers themselves. PDFs are SO clunky, especially for those of us who enjoy reading on an eink screen. IMHO, the biggest unlock will be when someone figures out a way to easily convert academic PDFs to .epub while preserving the flow of the document.
Still, in the meantime, I’m very glad to have this new project. Thanks again for building! Adding it to my bookmarks
Unfortunately there is only one way to get older generations onto a new app: make it the only place where they can see pictures of their grandkids
(I’m serious tho. When you have kids you can get their grandparents to install ANYTHING if you tell them it has pics of the new baby.)

But if he’s not logged in (because he doesn’t have an account) and he’s using a VPN (and maybe changing every time) then frequency shouldn’t matter bc Proton wouldn’t know it’s the same person
