World News@lemmy.world•World Cup tourists aren’t leaving tips — and restaurants are fighting backEnglish
34·5 days agoAnd tips are normally reported as a percentage of gross sales. Technically you can report less, but thats a good way to get catch a tax audit, and if the total tips reported from the restaurant fall too low the whole place will be audited. If your actual tips are short for the day the standard practice is to report the normal percentage and eat the loss.

Technology@lemmy.world•Hyundai takes full control of Boston Dynamics as SoftBank exits for $325 millionEnglish
6·5 days agoI think youve answered your own question. They, and everyone else making humanoid robots, have almost certainly tried. The fact that they are still having actors control their demos using VR systems tells you how well those tests went.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•money should have a expiration date too stop hoardersEnglish
7·5 days agoIts called inflation. And billionaires dont hoard money, they hoard assets. Most of the time inflation just makes them richer, as salaries drain out year over year and their stock prices keep going up.

Technology@lemmy.world•Hyundai takes full control of Boston Dynamics as SoftBank exits for $325 millionEnglish
261·5 days agoThats definitely not a valuation youd expect for a company that had any chance of delivering. General purpose humanoid robots are the other half of the AI-singularity-permanent oligarchy vision: data centers to replace knowledge workers and robots to replace physical labor, then…I dont know, fly off to Mars or something?
Anyway, if there was a chance they were close to producing a robot that could actually function as a human analog they should be pushing a trillion dollar valuation in this market.

They didnt even have a human do an editing pass, just a straight copy paste out of the dialog box.

Technology@lemmy.world•'At some point you've got to make money': Goldman's top AI skeptic warns the clock is running out ahead of OpenAI and Anthropic IPOsEnglish
6·18 days agoThey certainly cant make their money back writing personal emails and doing kids homework, but I dont think thats where they are aiming in the long run. We may end up with big business and military paying big money for the real frontier models and everyone else using lightweight local models on their own hardware, cheap models integrated into existing applications, and watered down frontier models on subscription.

Technology@lemmy.world•‘A’ Grades Are Suddenly Everywhere Since the Arrival of ChatGPTEnglish
55·1 month agoMaybe the bigger problem is that the education system is teaching things that AI is already able to ace. Love it or hate it, AI isnt going away and it also has serious and persistent shortfalls that probably wont be resolved without further breakthroughs. We should stop feeding students busy work and pretending its an education.

Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft has an ambitious plan to win users back, and go toe-to-toe with Valve's SteamOS for gaming — but I'm not getting my hopes upEnglish
3·2 months agoThat almost never works. By the time a monopoly starts to crumble the rot is systemic. In this case, every single internal stakeholder at MS is going to sabotage the project as soon as someone tells them their baby cant use 3GB of ram and track every mouse click the user makes while it forces flashing ads onto the screen.

241·2 months agoThere are parts of the world where the Facebook app basically is the Internet. Places where most people dont own a laptop, but everyone has a cell phone and phone service comes bundled with discounted Facebook data. Their hold goes way beyond social networking to, local businesses and even government services dont have webpages, they have Facebook pages only. Every game people play runs through Facebook, and all their saves are locked up with them. Every video people post or watch runs through Facebook and its hyper localized algorithm. It would take generations to displace them.

46·2 months agoThis is pretty much what everyone said immediately after Anthropic reached for the “too powerful for the public” excuse. Weve all seen this exact song and dance before. I suppose when you’ve just finished shoveling billions of dollars of speculative funding into a data center inferno its not acceptable to say that you rolled the dice and they came up snake eyes, but its still galling to be lied to so transparently.

16·3 months agoSurely this leopard will not eat my face. When will people learn, hell always, always, betray you eventually, unless you have the tapes.

Not it doesnt say to over report your tips, but it does say that if you or your employer report under a certain percent of sales as tips, exactly what percentage they wont say, that theyll audit you, and that that percentage is at least 8%.
