I‘ve heard that graphene ships with the vanadium browser per default. how does that compare to Ironfox? i‘m somewhat surprised that graphene doesn’t go with what so many ppl recommend?

Open Source@lemmy.ml•VideoLAN Publishes Dav2d For Open-Source AV2 Decoder
3·2 months agointeresting, when reading this article a while back, it sounded like av1 was pretty good at preserving grain, the best even.
am wondering whether it comes down to the settings used.
i really don’t get it either. i feel like op tends to write well researched and thought out blogs, which are nice to read too.
@op: you do good stuff!
they even have a blog post telling you to never click domains that look like the domain of the blog :D
i was not advocating for this UP phone in any way and am sorry if it seemed that way. my next phone will indeed be running on GrapheneOS.
I was just trying to point out that using third party vpn infrastructure can make sense, even though i wouldn’t trust the vpn of UP in any way. trust is a difficult thing, but as of right now i’m liking mullvad.
tbf, i do have some trust in mullvad. and if i own the server, people might know its me because its my server. (as in, the only one using it and possibly some tethers to my name through accounts and payments)

13·2 months agoyes, but
- installing it can be not so straightforward. this is a good resource for guidance/troubleshooting
- the free version is limited in the codecs it can process (licensing issues some say, but kdenlive can work with them, so…). you can look up the supported codecs rather easily, but being unable to use h264, h265, and aac can be a pain in the butt.
you’re very right! i’ll submit a bug report if i keep having weird issues.
thank you for your kindness and have a good time :D
well, i certainly had that issue you’re mentioning with no call button showing up, but i made a separate group chat (since i was planning on using this for chill chats whilst gaming with more than one person). in that group chat i can click the call button, but it’ll just crash on me. mby movim doesn’t like firefox and mby it doesn’t like linux. dunno, but i wont give up on it yet
i’ll need to keep fiddling with movim, as it still won’t let me have voice or video calls. the movim.eu account does however allow me to take good calls via dino, so that’s something.

1·3 months agoi also felt like movim would be themost fitting/ feature complete and easy (just create an account and go), but for some reason i just cannot get calls to work. i’m probably doing something wrong, but considering that i’m a serial chat app tester, i expected to be able to troubleshoot it… eventually, i managed to take the movie.eu account and call via dino and monal, but that’s not as feature complete as movim. do you have any recommendations for using movim for calls?
if you can cycle your home assistant with the shelly plug whilst your home assistant is down, yes. from experience it’s really quite annoying to have a smart plug switch off HA…

however i really don’t want to publically display my address and phone number. i’d love to have a fax number that converts to pdf/ email tho. well, and then i’d need to rent an address…

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Question: Is there a Self Hosted Discord like app?English
39·5 months agoI‘ve been looking into this a bit and whilst i haven’t really tried any of the alternatives, i did collect some notes:
possible contenders
- zulip
- apache-2.0 self hosted more work focussed
- stoatchat (formerly revolt)
- AGPL-3 self hosted
- teamspeak
- proprietary … self hosted older ts3 with ts6 announced
- mumble
- license seems foss - self hosted
- spacebar
- AGPL-3 self hosted
- return to irc or xmpp
probably no
- matrix - could not decryptinator
- a hassle regarding voice
- peersuite
- very very young and not really ready
- https://lemmy.dbzer0/post/45470657
DO NOT
- mattermost
- play stupid games, win stupid prices
- guilded
- owned by roblox
- slack
- discord
- ventrilo
- proprietary - not selfhosted - no linux
please let me know what y’all think
- zulip

This comment very much resonates with me. been distro hopping for a while, with ubuntu, arch, debian, and nix. fedora has been very awesomely boring, with the caveats mentioned above.
codecs were confusing at first, just like flatpaks.
in just one way my personal preferences differ here. i love using podman and always try using that first, and only then switch to docker if necessary. i also use fedora on my work laptop, and was surprised how many more steps it took for my colleagues to get podman running well. (still more enjoyable than docker imo)
