News@lemmy.world•Los Angeles police fatally shoot pet dog of family celebrating Knicks winEnglish
21·8 days agoWhere exactly am I supposed to see that? (I already mentioned having to use Reader Mode for OP’s article; here’s one that probably has the same pictures.) The size of the dog is not clear from the Knicks shirt picture, though I notice he apparently takes up a full couch cushion. In the still from the aftermath video, the blurred out dog is almost as long as the grieving woman - it certainly doesn’t give the impression of a small dog, though without properly seeing the posture and more visual references it’s hard to actually tell. This source says the dog was a “golden retriever/St. Bernard/poodle mix” - that doesn’t sound small to me.

47·9 days agoI guess? I agree that any shooting should happen responsibly (train people before you give them guns ffs), but what do you mean “the dog will not kill the cop”? People do die from dog attacks, and even if it isn’t that common I don’t see how anyone can be expected to just accept being mauled. How are you supposed to defend yourself?

47·9 days agoI read the article with Firefox Reader Mode. Here’s how the cops describe the incident:
In a statement, the LAPD said its officers were directed to an apartment by a person who called them to report screaming, and when the woman opened the door they were confronted by a large, barking dog.
“The officers asked her to secure the dog, and the resident closed her door momentarily,” the statement said.
“She reopened the door, and the dog exited the apartment. Once outside of the apartment, the dog charged at one of the officers, resulting in an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS).”
It might be bullshit ofc, but I think this qualifies as “being approached” by a dog. It’s a dog owner’s responsibility to secure their dog, especially after being asked to.

6·14 days agoI guess that kinda solves the GPS spoofing that ruined it for me.
I don’t think it did - as I recall it was completely optional; Really felt like a straightforward “trade 3D data for this reward”. And I don’t remember this feature being specifically linked to Gyms (the subset of Pokestops you’re thinking of), but I could be wrong. At a later point they did enable interacting remotely with Gyms you had a Pokémon in, perhaps that was an attempt to even the playing field against spoofers?
Going for a long walk to a pokestop with nobody around, only for someone to hack and remotely take over the stop while I’m sitting there…
Oof, yeah I can see how that would suck - I mostly played in urban areas, so I could just assume anyone out of sight could reach the Gym from a nearby building. It never amounted to more than “where the hell are they reaching this from?!”, though in hindsight spoofers are a better explanation. Ignorance is bliss, I guess.
I think the data collection is a little too intrusive for me to even attempt playing it again though.
Yeah, I’ve sometimes thought about trying to get back into it, but every time I’ve tried I’ve just … not enjoyed it that much. Don’t think I’ve done that since the Saudis got ownership, and now this post is really the final nail in the coffin.

12·14 days agoYeah, Pokèstops were a thing from the start - they carried over from Ingress. What they introduced later was the possibility to “scan” Pokestops by basically filming at the physical location.

5·26 days agoInteresting. I assume you mean drugs as in psychoactive substances and not medication in general, right? I’d like to read up on this, do you have any sources? Particularily for these two bits:
Long term use increases anxiety and subsequently makes individuals even more dependent on the drug.
All drugs inevitably make whatever problem they treat, worse.
