  • There is a world in which you don’t have to sacrifice restaurant jobs while still having a proper minimum wage and having some level of tip culture. I live there, it’s called Canada. Servers, cooks and cleaners can make good money from tips while still being paid at the very least $15Cdn/hr ($10.60 US) by the restauranteur, higher outside the Prairies. Tipped minimum wage exists in Quebec but it is $13.30Cdn/hr ($9.35 US). It doesn’t have to be a one or the other situation, you can call it entitlement, but I call replacing wages with tips shifting the blame.

  • Welcome to Lemmy, thanks for the post detailing your experience and glad to hear you’re getting your family onboard too! I think you’ll feel right at home with the Linux nerds and tech privacy wonks here.

I wanted to consume the content instead of just being fed it.

Like you, this is the basis of a lot of my motivation to try and then stick with these FOSS programs, but perhaps differently than you, it also guides the extent to which I feel comfortable continuing to use some proprietary software and algorithms. I’ve committed to interacting with technology on my terms, even if I have reduced but not fully cut myself off from big tech.

  • Letting the government do anything good for you and your community, is the Republicans’ definition of communism and socialism. According to Republicans in Congress and the Trump admin and the Supreme Court, the role of the federal government is to subsidize billionaires and trillionaires, undertake vanity DC projects that are utter failures, start pointless wars they can’t finish, make everything unaffordable, tax Americans through tariffs, pardon criminals only in exchange for bribes gratuities, and send goon squads to harass immigrants and dissenters.

Under these terms, who wouldn’t want communism and socialism?

  • What’s the threshold for a tag?

Just add context as a top level comment or in the body text area. Someone can come in to clarify if the poster is missing it.

Even for a poster sometimes it’s not obvious if there is any AI in the project. Example: Lutris, dev said they are adding Claude commits and will be scrubbing mentions of the tool from PRs. Sometimes AI is discussed but rejected.

It’s easy to tell when a whole project has been vibecoded, but the grey zone of an existing project that may or may not have had slopcode added, is tougher for posters to discern.
