He does seem at least willing to cooperate with the EU and not block things like this unless it’s actually, genuinely in Hungary’s interest from a traditional conservative POV. Not great, but sane, at the very least.

This particular case is nearly the perfect embodiment of the oft cited retort to this phrase, “The enemy of my enemy is my enemy’s enemy, nothing more, nothing less.” China is literally never your friend, even when your interests align nearly perfectly, because China works very hard to ensure it never bears the burden of friendship.

Nobody else is willing to join this because some internet rando promised them it would work, and a solid chunk of the population would be unwilling to join even if there was no consequences because they generally back the regime and its warmongering.
