Linux@lemmy.ml•Is it possible to use a virtual machine to more safely run pirated games on linux?
5·1 month agoI’m running everything that is proprietary (Steam for example) on a second user that is a not an admin account. Heroic and the like are installed via Flatpak that is sandboxed. Sometimes games contain malware, even on Steam. If something goes badly wrong, I purge that second user.

Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft admits a Windows 11 bug is eating up to 500GB of storage, verify if you are affected.English

A shop that’s been around for ages and is very generous when it comes to adding extra stuff to a big order - our local group is ordering there for many years now: https://www.ixsoft.de/cgi-bin/web_store.cgi (see “Fan-Artikel” then “Aufkleber” - yes, the website looks dated, I know)
There are dozens of articles about why Ubuntu has drawn criticism, here is an example: https://abh.ai/blog/why-ubuntu-and-canonical-drew-criticism-many-members-foss-community
I would recommend you read some of them to make up your own mind, and don’t rely too much on opinions here. Privacy is a broad term, only you know what is important to you and where you would draw the line.

Linux@lemmy.ml•How to diagnose a complete system freeze (no REISUB, no mouse/kb, have to hard reset)?
3·5 months agoFirst I always check with
sudo journalctl -rCheckjournalctl --helpfor more options or dosudo journalctl --since "2015-06-26 23:15:00" --until "2015-06-26 23:20:00"Then search errors online or come back with more questions.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Umbrachat is a peer-to-peer encrypted discord alternative
2·5 months agoThank you for this, it looks great!
I will have the time to check this out further on the weekend, but quick question before: will people be able to find channels aligned with their interests like they do on Discord? Let’s say for certain games or other topics. Because that is why many of my friends are still there.
KDE Neon is being used as playground for KDE, not Fedora. They update daily there: https://kde.org/distributions/
This might change when they are done developing KDE Linux: https://community.kde.org/KDE_Linux

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Are there still any email providers that offer free anonymous registration?
3·7 months agoYou could check this website but be aware it’s a long list for all kinds of services: https://riseup.net/radical-servers
They provide the GNOME or COSMIC desktop, if that is of relevance to some.
You are correct, one shouldn’t post while sick, sorry.
This is great, but sadly appimages don’t work on immutable desktops. But it’s very positive that they are providing that.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Installed Linux for the fist time in Feb, I've now started saving ISO's
6·8 months agoI don’t mean to crash the party, I used to love Ventoy too. But then the blob issue came up and it was met with silence for over a year by the maintainer, that made me a bit uncomfortable. They have responded to it a while ago, but it’s no trivial task to solve as I understand it: https://github.com/ventoy/Ventoy/issues/3224

Linux@lemmy.ml•Installed Linux for the fist time in Feb, I've now started saving ISO's
9·8 months agoFirst you need to download the provided file from the distro page. Something with Checksum in the name most of the time. The website should provide instructions. Please note that does not validate the gpg key.
Quick Method Terminal: Open the terminal at the location of the ISO file or go there with
cd. Typesha256sum NameOfIsoFile.iso- it takes a moment depending on your system. Copy the output (some long numbers/letters). Compare it with the downloaded checksum-file - open the file, press ctrl-f or whatever you have for find and paste it. If it’s found, it’s the same.Method KDE: Right click the file, open properties, then go to tab “Checksums”. Paste same number/letter combination from above into the provided space “Expected checksums…” - if it’s green, it’s correct.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Recommendations for after installing Linux (Mint) coming from Windows for best practices for a casual user ?
2·9 months agoSignal is included as Flatpak. You have to enable “untrusted Flatpaks” (or whatever the wording is) in the Software Manager settings.
It was a controversial thing Mint added not long ago. Discussing this in detail would derail the post though.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Recommendations for after installing Linux (Mint) coming from Windows for best practices for a casual user ?
36·9 months agoOne of the forums regulars, Pjotr, made this website exactly for questions like that: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/1.html

Linux@lemmy.ml•If you have to pick only one Desktop Environment and use it till your computer breaks, what would you choose?
1·1 year agoThat’s not too hard a question for me, I’ve been using the same DE for years: KDE

KDE has a lot on documentation, maybe you would get some inspiration of how this can be done: https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/documentation
