I’m old enough to maybe have known about this. But I didn’t. Had absolutely no clue. The other person’s responses indicate they are advocating for people like me. Ignorance of a travesty doesn’t mean we are endorsing those atrocities. But clearly you expect clairvoyant level view that only matches what you already know. That’s not reality. That’s an unacceptable worldview that brings absolutely zero progress to stopping stupid shit like that. Go ahead and block the other user. But block me too please. I have no time for people who refuse to see that there is nuance in the world. My feed would be better of not dealing with self righteous assholes like yourself.

I’ve got a friend working on this process right now. He openly admitted to me that the premise is fucked up and there are far more deserving populations that should be let in, but the simple fact is,he would be an absolute moron to pass up this opportunity for him and his family. It’s a fast track to the place he wants to be and provides better futures for his children. Why wouldn’t you take the free ticket?
Some of the people here on lemmy forget their humanity sometimes.

It’s ok bud. You misattributed the sunk cost fallacy. It happens. I’ve done it before too… No worries.
A sunk cost fallacy requires a continued investment in a lost cause. I financially have contributed no extra to Plex after my initial investment. I’ve nothing to lose now. No sunk cost. Is time or effort a sunk cost? Possibly? But I already invested that time and effort. My maintenance is also zero, same as my future financial investment. Switching to jellyfin increases my cost in time and effort that I already invested in Plex. Why bail unless necessary? It’s illogical.
The difference between unusable and inferior was never the cusp of this argument to begin with. The distinction of “unusable” vs “inferior” can clearly be acertained by the context of my first full reply. Interestingly enough, your reubuttle is a textbook use of the informal fallacy known as “moving the goalposts”
One again, it’s all good. Don’t worry. My point that Plex is still superior for my use case and I have the incentive to continue using it, still stands. Your use of the sunk cost falacy is disproven on the merit of, that’s not a real example of sunk cost, and also using additional fallacies to defend your position render your point invalid.
I rest my case.

That’s not a sunk cost fallacy at all. I’m not playing catch up, I’m already ahead.
I am thinking about it logically. Plex is the superior experience, and considering I’ve already gotten my money’s worth out of it, they are both free. So why would I use the service that works less well for my use case?
If the user experience continues to degrade, when it finally gets to jellyfin level, I’ll switch.
Perfectly logical, no fallacies here.

Same. Got it cheap. Untill they break lifetime. Why bail? I’m not compromising my own experience because someone else was too cheap, lazy or slow.
Is it messed up what they are doing? Yeah. But that’s not my fault. Nor is someone missing out on the very clear signposts about what was going to happen. I’m not sacrificing my user experience and investment to justify someone else’s missed opportunity or vendetta.

I already paid when it was cheap. I’ll stay and get my full dollars worth and then some. I paid for it, I’ll use it. When it is unusable I’ll bail. Anything else is stupid.

I mean I got the less shitty sheriff out of the deal. The judge I wanted lost. A few years ago I got the better justice of the peace. There hasn’t been a dem contender in years for any of those positions. I would say I’ve done the proper and right thing. I have no actually affiliation with the gop but it has allowed me effectively fulfill my civic duty by helping elect the most fit local officials. My situation is not rare or unique.

Bud, protest votes are a big thing in states with open primaries. Minimalizing the bullshittery and all that.
I myself am in Texas and have up until a few years ago been a “Registered Republican” on the official books. I haven’t actually voted for anything remotely red since well before Obama. But that’s how the system works. When your state is cooked, you find a way to oppose it, inside or outside the system. We are finally hitting the point where what’s on the books vs what the actual sentiment is, it’s starting to finally matter.

Dude your good. People are complicated. Legacies are messy. There’s nuance. Its easy to make a blanket statement that “all billionaires are evil”
Its more difficult to reflect and analyze a person or situation and think for yourself and find good, or bad, in something. Don’t apologize and don’t let Lemmy’s hard line lazy ass one liners make you second guess that.
If a time travelers footsteps on a butterfly in the Jurassic can change the sentient race in the future, I figure that a billionaire absent mindedly funding a water well can accidentally bring the next utopia. I’m not holding my breath, but good things tend to ripple outwards.

Two entities you hate are about to duke it out…
I don’t know who will win, but I do know one thing. You don’t fuck with the mouse. Steamboat Willie is a dirty fighter.

Live nation entertainment is the company formed after Ticketmaster merged with live nation. Concert promotion and ticket sales. So they have a long rap sheet of alleged but obvious price fixing and anti competitive lawsuits and allegations.
As for not knowing who kanye west is… Let’s just say he is a mentally unstable black hiphop artist and self confessed nazi, as per his last unmedicated manic episode and subsequent album. And media interviews. And vocal trump support. Its a roller coaster of a ride. Also he married Kim Kardashian and that’s not even the top ten of questionable decisions he’s made in the past decade.

Yeah. That’s unfortunate. An absolute travesty. But we’ve found a way to fix what we have fucked up. And that’s good. Don’t minimalize it.
We’ve broken the system. That sucks. But we’ve found a way to fix it for now. Not as good, but we are trying to do something.
Give some credit to the folks that are trying to fix our fuck ups. God damn it some people have realized what a mess we’ve made and are trying to do something to fix it. Small wins may just save our asses if we let them stack up enough.

If I paid a thousand bucks for a flagship phone, I should be able to install whatever the fuck I want. Full stop.
If I paid twenty bucks for a secondhand basic bitch ass phone I should be able to install whatever the fuck I want. Double full stop.
What’s your argument? I can’t do whatever I want with my device? Fuck off.

Yeah we can do that. What do you think side loading means? Changing the name of an install doesn’t make it different. Back in my day we called it installing a program. Things changed. Then we called it downloading an app. Things changed. Now if it’s not approved it’s called side loading? Blow it out your ass.
Its a program. Take the training wheels off of the Internet. I grew up when this was a cautionary tale. But up and deal with the consequences or get out.

For small an medium sized businesses, especially in agriculture, it has a real utility. Hedging commodities I need to buy to feed my animals has made the difference between break even and deep in the whole some years.
Yes there is market manipulation for some of these buyers, but I would say for the vast majority it is an asset in a very tight margin game. But I’m here producing a product and feeding into the whole economy, not just extracting resources and capital as some useless day trader.

I buy mine third party refurbished off of Newegg.
That good enough?

As a farmer who warned my friends and neighbors about this fact during and after the election, the déjà vu of all of this is absolutely not worth the wait. We’ve literally been here before. And it was bad bad.
I’ve never wanted to say “I fucking told you so”
I still don’t.
But here we are. And they still somehow have no idea. Its fucking wild.
The worst part is knowing and being powerless despite it all. The most frustrating ones are the people that see the signs and are preparing. Hell they will probably survive it too. Lick their wounds and trudge on again. But they never once hit the point where they realize their actions are the reason this is happening.
I’m hitting the point where I don’t dread the collapse anymore. In the most nhiallistic of senses, Im starting welcome it. And I’m so damn disappointed that it’s gotten to this point.

As someone who uses H2A labor and has for years. Let me just say that the damage this administration has done to the legal migrant worker channels is absolutely insane. Ignoring the illegal immigrant abuses happening, methods to bring in legal workers were clogged, inefficient, and burdensome before these fucksticks were in charge. Now it’s broken so badly that I have multiple persons in multiple countries that have every bit of paperwork approved, but the gov still will not put that final signature on their visa. For three god damn months! I had to send three of my employees back to their countries of origin because the gov broke the seasonal rollover program. I have two more that couldn’t get their passports stamped at the border to prove they left on time, and therefore cannot prove they abided by the rules of their visa. And another two who’s spouse visas are not being processed because that’s not something that’s essentially automatic anymore for some fucking reason.
I’ve busted my ass to take care of my people and this fucking administration finds new and creative ways to break down an already shitty system. Its fucking disgusting. I have valid visa holders scared to go to the god damn grocery store because ice does not give a flying fuck anymore. Ghhaaaa!
As a farmer, dairyman, and rancher with way too many cattle in Texas. I have this to say:
I was on the front lines of the bird flu cross species fiasco. Literally ground zero. Me and my cohorts were the boots on the ground and knew what was going on weeks before the state and fed acknowledged it. The acknowledgement of the problem was purely political and self serving. The government as a whole (state and fed) were refusing to test and confirm what we already knew. I have evidence and correspondence with officials and veterinarians to back it up.
My take away: it’s a god damn miracle we survived Covid as well as we did. That should have been so much worse.
When it comes to the screwfly situation: I had little faith under previous administrations this would be handled properly. In Texas, sid miller was talking about woke agendas and playing partisan hack instead of prioritizing resources. We’ve had almost two god damn years! They all figured the people they were firing and defunding would handle it properly. With what resources?. Systematically dismantling our safety nets caused this.
This problem is one hundred percent political incompetence. Any IT professional that has been laid off because " your department doesn’t do anything" will tell you that a successful job done is literally twiddling your thumbs because you did it right. Y2k was a victory lap that the general public and politicians laugh at because it wasn’t a problem. It wasn’t a problem because we fixed it before the world ended. This screw fly trainwreck is what happens when you don’t listen to IT and fire them all for being lazy.
Detection in mexico was non existent. The screw fly hits the states and what is left of our protection finds it. Great job. Too late.
Tldr, your hamburger and steak prices will continue to be more expensive, but not from this. But the suffering of both domestic animals and wildlife will be greatly increased because these dipshits wanted to play politics instead of giving a shit about the bigger picture.
