I self host mine and it works. It is quite hard to set up at first but once you have configured it correctly it is satisfying.

Run it in some place where it can easily read the logs of your apps.

11·4 months agoIf you’re privacy conscious, then UnifiedPush is a good alternative to Google’s solution for push notifications.
You can. By it will be easier if you have a static IP.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Introducing Homelabinator, the easiest way to self-host.English
65·4 months agoI’m not fond of what makes it easier to set up a homelab. Because it might give the impression that you can run it with very little skills. And that opens the door to making your setup a netbot.

12·4 months agoI use Radicale as a Docker container and it runs fine, with no maintenance apart from upgrading the image once in a while.
I presume that its power consumption is not to be neglected. Do I’d just keep it off of I don’t really need it.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How to self-host a Prosody XMPP server on Bazzite with Podman for MovimEnglish
2·5 months agoSetting up an xmpp server is not a good entrypoint in the self-hosting space. It is quite hard to build. It is a complex system made of different components in order to achieve what you expect from it. I strongly recommend using existing servers. If you want to tinker, find something else (a samba share and a vpn on bare metal is a good starting point in order to learn).

11·7 months agoWhat strikes me is not the news. Palantir partners with many governments. What strikes me is the absence of this article in the French edition.
I wouldn’t recommend network apps to a complete beginner. They might loose their network for a while and get afraid of tinkering. My 2p
I have solved that by giving the distant machine the credentials to connect to the local machine. And the distant machine can’t be accessed from the outside.
