Technology@lemmy.world•Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders introduce AI Data Center Moratorium ActEnglish
1·3 days agoBusiness data doesn’t require the mega datacenters that are all compute for AI. Those types of datacenters won’t have the same issues with infrastructure for power and closed loop systems. If they do, they’ll figure it out because they have the money to do so. Someone will build them. DCs that have storage and racks for cloud compute are in a different category.
I agree and mentioned that talking heads will spin regulations in a way that convinces their idiotic base that there’s an issue. It’s not the regulations that are the problem, it’s the media. But the thing is, If it’s not regulations, it will be something else. It will be just as nonsensical, but something will fill that gap. Might as well do something good if the propaganda is gonna flow anyway.

Technology@lemmy.world•Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders introduce AI Data Center Moratorium ActEnglish
3·3 days agoPer itar regulations, government data already has to live in the US. They will never change that law in order to store it in another country’s DC.
And putting barriers on multi bullion dollar businesses is not the same as putting it on citizens. People aren’t going to vote a Republican because of regulations on a DC that makes the neighborhood quieter and cleaner, stops excessive water consumption for cooling, and forces them to build their own power infrastructure. They will vote Republican for a million other dumb AF reasons, including a conservative taking head telling them regulations are bad for DCs, but they won’t do it because of those reasons. They won’t even know what those reasons are

6·3 days agoCoal is a miniscule and shrinking source of power in the US regardless of how hard Republicans try to bring it back. We may end up poor, but it won’t end in coal being a dominating force again, especially given the oil we can harvest and use for natural gas.

2·3 days agoExactly this. If there’s any chance to right this ship, the constitution has to be part of the core of it. Now that old document definitely needs updated, but saying the constitution doesn’t matter throws away all defense for the 1st and most important amendment. It’s already been trampled on in some states, hence the comments saying the constitution doesn’t matter, but conceding on the point of it mattering means conceding the fight.

2·4 days agoMy response was only directed and the comment I responded too. I did not include the other factors like fucking with the machines or voter suppression, very real concerns. It was only about Trump blocking an election.
I do agree with your assessment on the matter though.

Technology@lemmy.world•GameStop CEO Cohen spurns $35 billion pay plan to focus on plan to buy eBayEnglish
2·4 days agoWhen I say shit the bed, I don’t mean from a business perspective, I mean I think he’s a toolshed for the crypto stuff, so in my eyes he shit the bed.
I think crypto is a cancer, so anyone that’s creating coins and actively pushing the tech is a douchebag. Even if they abandoned the idea, that doesn’t do anything for me. I’m assuming they dropped it because it wasn’t benefiting them enough to keep at it, not for some altruistic reason. Trust is hard to earn back. Wasn’t also NFTs not just crypto? NFTs are the dumbest tech ever invented, so anyone that was apart of that, on either side of burning or selling, is a dumbass and makes bad choices.
On top of all of that, the worst part of all of it, is he’s a Trump thumper and endorsed him. Anyone in that boat is bottom shelf trash, regardless of their business practices, and I will do everything in my power to not only not support them, but to lambast them at any opportunity. Shaming pedophile supporters should be an American past time, and I’m here for it.

191·4 days agoThat not a good reason to stop citing the constitution. The moment people stop doing that, then it’s completely over. It’s still beneficial to point it out so that people are genuinely aware. Also, federal judges have been shooting down Trump a lot recently. So yea, it does still matter.

politics @lemmy.world•Trump angrily cancels signing housing bill over voter ID ‘national emergency’
5·5 days agoThat’s not true. Once the bill is passed by both chambers, enrollment is handled by the clerk of the house and secretary of the Senate. Johnson has no power over their actions and can’t block anything since it’s now past his control. Now, that’s not say say he couldn’t try to convince them with the no power he has to hold it up, but I don’t know who the clerk or secretary are, if they would capitulate, or what the ramifications could be if they declined to do their duties.

3·5 days ago100% of my lemmy takes place from my phone. I make typos all of the time, but unless I just grammatically fucked up, my message is understandable. Sometimes I’ll correct things, but usually I don’t bother reading back through to check. If my message is interpretable, that’s really all that matters.

Technology@lemmy.world•Valve says it isn't subsidizing the Steam Machine's $1050 price because of its "religious" refusal to "build a more closed system"English
3·5 days agoCompletely fair. Some fights aren’t worth fighting, especially since there’s no guarantee they’ll recoup the losses. I buy a few games a year on Steam, almost never at full price. It would take me a very long time to cover any subsidized machine, and I’m surely not the only one.
Honestly, a steam machine was on my radar because for about 10 years now, me and some friends have traveled to Dreamhack Dallas, and packing 5 men and our computer equipment in a big van and driving 13+ hours isn’t ideal. Something a bit smaller would be amazing. The price is a bit too rich for me since I do still have a functional computer.

4·5 days agoMy first thought was scalpers. But other than that, I agree with you. I think it would be good to limit sales to 1 or 2 units to prevent that and to give people that want to pay games a chance to buy one, then the people that want to cluster them or whatever can get their fix later. If someone wants to buy just one and modify it to do damn near anything, more power to them.

2·5 days agoWhat you read may well be correct, but I wonder how that legal battle would play out. There are other PC manufacturers that can definitely build a competing product. Also, what sets this apart from being another console? It’s a custom built machine designed to play games, specifically from Steam. I’m not sure how that’s different from an Xbox that has access to GamePass being the only console that can do that. If Steam sold this as the Steam Machine Console, would that change things?

231·5 days agoHe can try, but elections are a state level thing that he can’t stop. If red states want to abstain, more power to them, but there will be lawsuits, and the citizens will win. Maybe some hopium in there, but most of this stuff is pretty clear cut, and there have been a lot of judges siding against Trump recently, so there’s strong precedent.
Also, god willing, he will be fucking dead by then.
