Sure, but it seemed like he had some plan with his lying back in the beginning, some premeditation and some effort to build a story that can at least survive a couple of weeks. Recently his lies seem internally inconsistent, easy to debunk immediately, and just give him no benefit. Makes me think he doesn’t even understand himself that they aren’t true, it’s just stream-of-consciousness wishful thinking.
