I’ve taken a pay cut when switching jobs before. I still used my old salary to make them give me the best offer they could muster. You may be surprised to learn that it didn’t bankrupt them.

In the absence of unionization, the worker should take every opportunity to bolster their position in the employer/employee power imbalance
