I hate using Google maps but stuck with it for live updates. Using android auto, I complained for years about the layout and finally they updated it so the buttons were on side and bottom so you can physically align using the screens frame… For the most part. Their button order still is dumb if I recall correctly.
In their discord one of their engineers has mentioned opt in for vehicle lifecycle telemetry (battery health, temp, draw, charge cycles, specifically said that location and even speed would be mostly useless for them so no plans to collect that). Whether that means they won’t collect it, or can’t collect it I’m not 100% sure.
That’s disappointing to hear. I hope there’s an easy way to reversibly disconnect the data antenna while keeping every other service intact. It really sucks being constantly aware that anything you say in your own car’s cabin may no longer be private.
Connectivity and telemetry starts off about improving the product and ends up with subscription features and selling your behaviour.
And I hate that because the privacy implications are significant but the utility of the data is too, in so many areas - provided it’s reviewed and used, which it frankly seldom is because politics get in the way.
Slate would be perfect for my current needs. Less than 25km a day, trips to buy wood for my shitty woodworking, etc. Stuff too big or too far to use my bike for safely. Its slated (sorry…) for 2027. It’s not my time.
So here in the land of geese and syrup we’ve got giant American earth destroyers or the tiny Japanese utility trucks. In between would be awesome. The Chinese EV’s with some Pickups are coming and, although the monitoring and data capture bothers me, somehow it feels the lesser of two evils compared to legacy makers with this pay to play and forced ad combination. Is that an accurate assessment?
This is only downside of electric cars for me.
This has nothing to do with cars being electric, the ad was shown on modern ICE BMW’s too.
Yep, stupidity is applied to all cars.
I want cars with buttons and knobs
I fully get that. I personally can accept well designed screens but I know I am in the minority.
I still need to look at it to hit the target.

looking forward to the slate - no garbage, just ev truck.
shame it’s a bezos startup tho.
Telo may be awesome too if it survives.
Do you know if Telo has telemetry? Can’t find info on that anywhere.

I do not. If they get gobbled up, it’ll have it for sure, but so far it’s a tiny company so…?

They are cars. There’s your downside.
