I have a bias and say I already have a good impression of Andy because of his evidently good policies as the previous mayor of Manchester. Though of course, being a mayor is different from being the prime minister of the country. We will also see if “Manchesterism” could scale up on the national level.

Let’s see how he handles existing Labour policies such as the Palestine Action ban, the recent abuse of anti-terrorism laws by reactionary judges, Mahmood’s strategy of trying to out-Reform Reform, and the imbecility that brought Palantir to government systems. My guess, and I hope I’m wrong, is that he won’t change any of that, instead focusing on marginal infrastructure reforms and rolling back failed privatisations. Good things to do, but with long lead times, and meanwhile the state bullying and intrusive surveillance are still there, and Labour’s only response to Reform continues to be “yeah, you’ve got a point.”
